COUPLES and RELATIONSHIP CONCERNS:
Relationships, whether they are romantic, familial, friendly, or work related, can be challenging for us all. Many of these relationships can leave us vulnerable, particularly in romantic and familial ones. Common intimate relationship struggles include the pattern of choosing the wrong partner, a fear of commitment, difficulty trusting (or trusting too quickly), fear or uncertainty about leaving a relationship, anger, fear of intimacy, infidelity, destructive patterns, sexual identity issues, and uncertainty about what constitutes an abusive relationship.
Unhappy relationships often suffer from an unhealthy dynamic, in which certain patterns of behavior have become reinforced. Some common unhealthy patterns include: getting victimized or victimizing, using guilt to express anger or get needs met, passive-aggressive ways of expressing anger, being domineering or controlling, submerging one’s own identity or individuality, giving far too much or too little (boundary confusion), inability to communicate effectively or directly, being overly accommodating then resentful, rescuing, harboring anger or hurt, and a lack of respect.
As our thoughts and feelings become more ingrained in us, these unhealthy patterns and unhappiness often transcend more than one area of our lives. Individuals may find themselves engaging in rivalry, impulsive behavior, difficulty with assertiveness, anger, feelings of victimization or intimidation, feeling controlled or being controlling, and poor judgment.
In addition, in times of stress, individuals may unintentionally overwhelm their loved ones with their problems, or push those they love most away by withdrawing. When one relationship suffers, all facets of life can be tainted by the stressful effects. Joanna Leigh is skilled, compassionate, and solution-oriented; and can help clients establish a sense of respect, trust, and a method for resolving conflicts without fighting.
